The Historisk Museum is also called the Museum of Cultural History. It is a part of the University of Oslo in Norway. In 1999, the museum was established when the Universitetets kulturhistoriske museum was merged with the Viking Ship Museum. Since 2004 the name of the museum has been Kulturhistorisk museum.
The activities that take place in the museum are concentrated in the 4 main buildings located at the city center of Oslo. These buildings include St. Olavs gate 29, Frederik’s gate 3, the laboratory sheds located at Frederik’s gate 3, and Frederik’s gate 2. In addition, there is the Viking ship museum which is located on the Bygdoy peninsula.
The Historisk Museum is the biggest cultural history museums in the country. Visitors will find the biggest medieval archaeological and prehistoric collections. This includes the Viking ship collection located at Bygdoy. There is a substantial amount of medieval church products along with a rune archive. In addition, the museum is home to an ethnographic collection, which includes an object from each of the continents as well as the largest collection in Norway of historical coins.
Currently, there is a large review and renovation of the museum being completed in a major project. This project was started in connection with the planned move of the museum to another location into a new building that is in Bjorvika. The move is planned to take place in 2015.
