Henie Onstad Kunstsenter
Henie Onstad Kunstsenter is located in Hovikiodden, in the Baerum municipality. It is an art museum and is just about 10 kilometers south of the city of Oslo. It was founded in the year 1968 by Sonja Henie, who was an Olympic champion in figure skating and her husband Niels Onstad, who was a shipping magnate as well as an art collector. They had a private collection that consisted of more than 110 images. They also donated the money to construct and operate the center. The money came from their foundation, which was created in 1961. The building was designed by Sven Erik Engebretsen and Jon Eikvar. The museum contains Henie’s awards as well.
The building was extended in 1994. At this time a 2 story addition was added that included technical rooms and more exhibition space. The same architects designed the addition. Another extension was made in the year 2003. The 2003 extension forms an annex that extends to an outdoor park. The outdoor area is connected to the museum by a passage that leads from the lowest level. The museum now has 6 exhibition halls, small meeting rooms, and an auditorium. The total area of the building is around 9500 square meters. About 3500 square meters are taken up by exhibition spaces.
About 100,000 people visit the art museum every year.
