Geilo

Geilo is located in a valley in Hallingdal. There are about 2300 people that live in the town. Bergen Line, which was the first ski resort of Norway, was a facilitator of the development of the area. The ski resort remains one of the largest in the country. The area is famous for offering some of the most expensive and lavish holiday cabins in the country.

The town is mainly a ski resort town, but there is summer activities offered there as well. It is located in a valley and has mountains on each side. The center of the town is about 800 m above sea level. The highest point of the town is around 1178 m above sea level. Geilo is about 250 kilometers from Oslo. There is a train station in the town and about 5 trains run through each day going either west to Bergen or East to Oslo.

Ski season starts in late October and runs through the last part of April. There are a number of small ski centers that make up a single resort. This resort is called Geilo Skiheiser. The resort has slopes on the side of the valley where the town is, slopes down the back of the mountain in Havsdalen, and there are also slopes across the valley in Geilolia. This area connects to Kikut as well. In total there are 39 slopes that cover 33 kilometers. There are 20 lifts that serve the slopes.

The Geilolia ski center tends to have the easier runs that are blue and green. There is also a large ski school that operates here. Slaatta ski center has blue and red runs as well as an extensive area for cross country skiing. There are 220 kilometers of track, with 5 kilometers under the flood lights so you can ski at night. There are pamphlets available that show the trails and how long they are.

There are many skiing options available at the resort including cross country, alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemarking, toboggan, dog sledging, and ski orienteering. Most evenings there is skiing available. Another activity that is becoming quite popular in the area is called kiting. This is skiing or snowboarding while attached to a parasail or “kite.”

Some of the activities available in the area during the summer months include go karts, white water rafting, paintball, golf, cycling, tennis, and rallying. Mountain biking and hiking are popular activities as well.
