The highest mountain in Norway is Galdhopiggen. The mountain reaches a peak of 2469 meters. Lying in its shadow is Elveseter, a farming estate. This area has quartered visitors in the area since the year 1880. In recent years, the estate has been rebuilt into a tourist hotel. The hotel was designed in the architectural style from the valley.
The oldest house in the area is Midgard. This house dates back to the year 1640. Near the home is Sagasoylen. This is a monument that is 33 meters high. It is decorated with different motifs from throughout Norwegian history. The crowning piece of the monument is Harald Finehair riding a horse.
From this point, the scenic road RV 55 continues on to Sognefjellsveien, into Skjolden which is in Sogn. This road was maintained by the farmers in the area, from Sogn and Lom since about the year 1400. The road was used by people from the northern Gudbrandsdal who were trying to reach Bergen in order to trade the goods that they had.
A traffic survey that was completed in the year 1878 shows that there were 2658 horses and 16,525 individuals who travelled through the mountains in just that year. The road that is currently in this location was built in the year 1938. The highest point of the road sits at about 1440 meters above sea level.
