Crans-Montana is located in the southwestern part of Switzerland, and it is a ski resort. It is located right in the heart of the Alps in the Valais canton. It is situated on a plateau at an elevation of about 5,000 feet above sea level, and it gives people a great view over the Alps in Valais and especially Weisshorn. The resort is a combination of the two centers of Montana and Crans and belongs to six municipalities (Randogne, Montana, Mollens, Lens, Icogne, and Chermignon).
The Crans-Montana skiing area is comprised of roughly 87 miles of pistes, and it includes the Plaine Morte glacier. The Pointe de la Plaine Morte tops it.
Crans-Montana is well-known in ski racing, and it is sometimes on the World Cup schedule, especially for women’s speed skiing events. It also hosts the a pop rock rock festival in the wintertime called the Caprices Festival and the 2nd biggest European golf event which takes place every fall. The resort has also been used for bike racing, and it has hosted stage finishes of the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse several times. Crans-Montana also hosted the finish of 1984 Tour de France.
Crans-Montana offers the perfect break for tourists who want to see the best of Switzerland. It has been called a Swiss gem and an undiscovered treasure, even though the resorts and slopes have been visited for years.
Crans-Montana is definitely one of the surest bests for great skiing in the Alps. It is an easily accessible, affordable Swiss resort, but most British skiers don’t know about it.
The beautiful alpine architecture combines with the majestic views, and a cheap ski area whose big, broad, open slopes are for the most part a mix of easier and more difficult reds, plus some blues, which stretch well under the tree line, yet also have high altitude glacier skiing, and lot of good off-piste areas.
The resort is made up of a couple of distinct centers (Montana to the east and Crans to the west), connected by a mountain road, with great views across the canton of Valais and western Switzerland.
The English actor Roger Moore has owned a place there for several years since going there from Gstaad. Sophia Loren has had a place there overlooking the golf course on a resort. Other famous residents include Edoardo Molinari, Francesco, Sergio Garcia, Angel Gallardo, Adam Scott, Ali Bongo, Kathy Burke, and Michel Roux.
