Augusta Raurica Introduction

Augusta Raurica is a Roman archaeological location, and it is also an open-air museum in the country of Switzerland. It is situated on the southern shore of the Rhine River, and it is located about 20 kilometers to the east of the city of Basel, and it is close to the villages of Kasieraugst and August. It was where the oldest Roman colony on the Rhine was located.

Augusta Raurica in Modern Times

Castrum Rauracense is a Roman castle that is listed as a heritage site of national significance. Other heritage sites include the brick kiln located Liebruti and the early Christian baptisterium.

Excavations

A lot of the Roman buildings have been uncovered and preserved through excavations, and many of them are open to the public at large. Some of the places open to the public include the following:

  • Theatre: This is part of an architectural structure that is part of a temple
  • Main Forum: You can see the Jupiter temple, basilica, and the town council’s assembly chamber
  • Aqueduct: This structure supplied the place with drinking water from the Liestal.
  • Amphitheatre: Only the modern parts of the structure are preserved.

A lot of private commercial buildings have been discovered as well (a tile kiln, a potter, a bakery, and a taberna), as well as parts of a sewer. Roughly 80% of the area that has been built up hasn’t even be excavated. This city is thought to be the best preserved Roman settlement to the north of the Alps that hasn’t been built upon in modern or medieval times.

Roman House and Museum

The Roman Museum has the most notable discoveries from the Roman city and it displays Augusta Raurica’s history. When people are visiting the museum, they will usually find special exhibits, and they will also see the most important find in the city: the silver treasure of Kaiseraugst. This was an important treasure hoard that was discovered in the fortress in the early 1960s. It is thought to have been a commander’s treasure. The museum also has a Roman house reconstruction, with reconstructions and artifacts that show the daily commercial and domestic life from the Roman period.

Augusta Raurica is a great place to visit to look through a window into Roman history. Be sure to check out the Roman Museum when you’re in Augusta Raurica. It’s one of the most important places in Augusta Raurica.
