Alta

Alta is a small town in the Alta Municipality in Norway, and it is located in Finnmark County. The town is an important administrative site for the area, and it is situated on the Altafjorden, right at the point where the Altaelva river begins. There are a number of suburbs near to the town, and they include Rafsbotn, Tverrelvdalen, Ovre Alta, Jiepmaluokta, Kvenvik, and Kafjord. There are rock carvings that draw in tourists. 

There are three churches in the town. There is the historic church in Bosseksop called Alta Church. There is the newer Elvebakken Church located in Elvebakken, and there is the impressive Northern Lights Cathedral. This is considered the primary church. It was completed just recently in 2013. Alta is an important educational hub of Finnmark County. Finnmark University College is located in Alta, and there are also secondary and primary schools, like Alta Videregaende Skole. There is a courthouse in the town, and it serves the municipalities of Alta and Loppa. Alta IF is the primary sports team of Alta. 

Population 

Alta is regarded as the northernmost city with a permanent resident population in the entire world. For that reason, it holds a special spot in the hearts of tourists. There is a permanent resident population of more than 10,000 people. The town was founded in 2000 when the villages of Alta, Elvebakken, and Bossekop were merged together and called a town by council for the municipality. The town is just over nine square kilometers, and it has a little more than 14,000 residents, so there is a population density of roughly 1,600 inhabitants per sq. km.

Transportation 

Alta is a major transportation center for Finnmark County. The town has some port facilities on the Altafjorden, right by the Alta Airport. The airport has flights that go directly to Oslo. A major highway also goes through the town. The primary industries in the town are a concrete product factory, a number of sawmills and wood mills, as well as maritime, horticulture, and dairy services.
