Alpbach

In a high mountain valley on the Alpbach river lies the town of the same name that once a year becomes the intellectual capital of Europe. Every year since 1945, delegates representing the worlds of science, politics, economics and culture have gathered here to discuss the future of the world. Before the fall of communism in the Eastern bloc countries in 1989, Austria’s central position in Europe made this the most appropriate place for people from East and West to meet. Today their discussions are rather more academic, yet Alpbach has retained its great importance on Europe’s political and intellectual map. The floral displays outside the alpine houses and chalets in Alpbach rank among the best in the country. The little town also has the interesting Church of St Oswald. Its earliest records date from 1369, although it was altered in 1500 and the Baroque interior dates from 1724. The naves have ceiling paintings by Christof Anton Mayr (1751); the sculptures in the presbytery (c.1779) are the work of Franz Xaver Nissel.
