Nicosia - description of the city:

Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus, located in the central part of the island of Cyprus. It is the only city in the country, which is not a seaport. Nicosia was founded approximately on the 7th century B.C. It is home to 206 thousand inhabitants. There is an international airport, food and light industries. It is known for various developed handicrafts, especially pottery, and tourism. Museums include the Historical Museum and of archives, the Cyprus Museum, the Folk Art Museum, and the Lapidarium. Ancient buildings have not survived. Most of the monuments are of the Middle Ages. Among them, the Gothic Cathedral of St. Sofia (13-14 centuries), the Church of Our Lady and the Augustinians (both of about 1330), an ensemble of the market (the Gothic basilica, expanded in 14-16 centuries), the "Famagusta Gate" (16th century), and the St. John Cathedral (rebuilt in 1665, the cycle of paintings - about 1730). An interesting attraction is the Archbishop's Palace of modern structure (1950-59).
