N'Djamena - description of the city:
Chad Capital was founded in 1900th at the confluence of the Chari and Logone rivers. Up to 1973d year the city bore the name of Fort-Lamy. Until its renaming N`Djamena was known as one of the most beautiful and peaceful cities of the Sahel, where the French influence is clearly traced. However, begging soon after independence of the city, the civil war has caused terrible damage to its former glory.
Currently, the city is slowly returning to its real image, not least due to the fact that the inhabitance of N`Djamena are considered some of the friendliest and most hard-working people of Africa. The rapid growth of urban areas and intensive modernization of urban infrastructure made N`Djamena issued real political, economic, and cultural center of the country, and its bustling markets, craft workshops, and a lot of burgeoning musical cultural in stark contrast with a lot of tree-lined avenues, colonial palaces and fountains, left over from the past. Traces of potholes and bullets vividly reminded of the complicated history of the city, however, N`Djamena is changing for the better.
The city is divided into two parts- a small «European» or «administrative» area and mush larger and more lively- «African» area. Almost all of the sights in N`Djamena belong to the colonial period and are concentrated in the Old Town, which occupies the north-western part, near the Place de I`Etoile. There can be seen the towering over the city`s neighborhoods- Grand Mosque, colorful buildings of Prefecture and the President`s Palace, the Catholic mission in Chad National Museum with an unique collection of Sarh culture (IX century BC.e.), the University, as well as an extensive business district Kufra Camp, which is disposed almost entirely in the range of the colonial quarter.
