Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima - description of the city:

Nakhon Ratchasima is a town in the homonymous province on the north-east part of Thailand. It is located in south-west part of the Korat Plateau, on the one of Mun river flows. The town also called Korat.

In the Nakhon Ratchasima area the history of the first settlements originates since the early medieval period of the kingdom of Dvaravati, at VI-X centuries. At the beginning of the XI century the kingdom was conquered by Khmer Empire till the XIV c.

When Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782, Nakhon Ratchasima has become the largest and strategically important city in the north-east of the country, guarding the border with Cambodia and Laos which were in vassal dependence on Siam. In 1826 the town was captured by the Laotian army of Anouvong king, who tried to gain independence for Laos. Organizing of a successful defense of the city is attributed to Kuning Mo, wife of the vice-governor Nakhon Ratchasima. Later she has received the name Thaosuranari, which means Brave woman. After, the city is revered her as a hero. In the end of XIX c. was held a reconstruction of old monuments and construction of residential areas.

The most important bunch of industry is a silk production. Nakhon Ratchasima is a centre of breeding of Karat cats. The breed originates also in this province. The city is located in the north-east of the railway line which connects Bangkok and Nong Khai. At 26 km from the city is an airport, which did not carrie passenger transportations from 2006.

Khorat city became more open and interesting for foreigners for the last five years, and there are already so much places to see: Thao Suranaree Monument, Wat Sala Loi, Khorat Zoo, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base( which used during the Vietnam War, by US Air Force), and multiples shopping centres and department stores.
