Mutare - description of the city:

Mutare is located in the far east of Zimbabwe. Until 1982th the village was called Umtali. Almost 8 km form the urban neighborhoods the border with Mozambique lies. Modern Mutare is a political and administrative center of the province of Manicaland. Stable revenue the city treasury gets by the food, textile and paper, furniture and woodworking industries. Not far from Mutare are gold mines. In addition, in the city are functioning production of processing in cotton, tobacco, tea, and cereals in local cultivated places. In Murate is also the city`s airport, which is located 3km from the city center, and serves only domestic flights.

Mutare was founded in the late 19th century, in 1890, after in place of the future city was founded deposits of gold. The origin of the name of the settlement is also associated with minerals resources. Mutare in the translation sounds like a piece of metal. Originally a small settlement of gold miners was called Umtali and it located in a valley between two river «arteries»- Mutare and Tsambe. In 1891, the settlement was moved to a new location, but 5 years later it was returned to the previous place. On the development of the city, its achievements and victories, numerous exhibits of the city museum narrate in details.

In Mutare and its surroundings area are several museums, including the Museum of Mutare, Utopia House Museum, and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. There are also a range of colleges and universities. In the nearest Muragva-Hill hills can be seen prehistoric rock paintings. The city is also considered as the center of the Roman-Catholic bishopric of Mutare.
