Mueang Nonthaburi - description of the city:

Mueang Nonthaburi is one of the main district of Nonthaburi province in Thailand. Nonthaburi city is second largest city in Thailand, located not far from Bangkok. It is also a part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Aera.

History of Mueang Nonthaburi starts back about 400 years to the era of Ayutthaya Kingdom. The original name of the district was Talat Khwan. One French extraordinary to the king of Ayutthaya, Simon de la Loubere, wrote about Talat Khwan as a main place of the Chaophraya river side. However, it is unknown what a year it was established. In 1917, the provincial administration of Nonthaburi was moved into the district, and thus the district was renamed to Mueang Nonthaburi.

Nonthaburi is not a too popular place for tourists, but anyway it has enthralling places to see. There is the Ko Kret island. Wat Khemaphirataram Rajaworawiharn is an eastern bank near the Chao Phraya river, was built during Ayutthaya period. Under the reign of Rama II the monastery has been renovated and under the auspices of the King. There is also large pagoda considered as a main icon of the Buddha. There are also a lot of another Buddhist temples like the Tamnak Daeng Building and Phra Thinang Monthian Hall.

Nonthaburi city has a place for golf enthusiast-Royal Irrigation Department Golf Course.  

In Mueang Nonthaburi region is a Bang Kwan Central Prison. It is a men`s prison near the Chao Phraya River. There are many foreign prisoners and strict regime. Bangkwang Prison considered to be a prototype for a plot of «Bangkok Hilton» fictional prison for Australian TV show of the late 1980s.
