Mayagueez

Mayagueez - description of the city:

Mayagueez («Sultan of the West») is underrated by Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. it is a slightly «disheveled» port city. which has always played the third role, after San Juan and Ponce, but travelers shouldn’t «write off» this city. Today Mayagueez rapidly revives and the traces of this rapid development appear manifested literally everywhere. Just look at the cleverly renovated Cathedral and the adjacent with it Cathedral square (plaza Colon). No wonder that the west coast of Puerto Rico and Mayaguezz are called «Porta del Sol» (Port of the Sun). In Mayagueez were carried the Central American and Caribbean Games 2010.

The city was founded in 1760th by emigrants from the Canary Islands. At first, the city developed in not favorable conditions, but, inspire of everything, Mayagueez became what it is today- a densely populated and important Puerto Rican town. Economic growth in Mayagueez based on the development of agriculture and export of fruits. Today, staying in this port city tourists associate with a steady, sweet scent of mango, which is haunting travelers everywhere. In the middle of 19th century mayagueez looked as a «black sheep» among another towns in Puerto Rico. It gave a shelter for many revolutionary thinkers, such as Ramon E. Betances (instigator of a failed uprising against Spanish colonialism, known as the «Grito de Lares», revolution of 1868th). In 1918 in Mayagueez was devastating earthquake. Tremors force up to 7.6 by the Richter scale are almost completely destroyed the central business center, but the city withstood, and rose from the ruins.

In the city is not too much tourists now, they prefer Rincon on the north-west and South Cabo Rojo. But, despite this, in Mayadueez a lot of of places to have a great time. There is the only one in Puerto Rico planetarium and zoo, the magnificent Yagues theatre, night clubs and bars, where the bulk of visitors are students. There are also a hospitable people, who love spontaneously organize any celebrations, such as Cino Dias con Nuestro Tierra. It is a trade fair of agriculture industry and products.
