Description of Macao
Macao is located south of China near Hong Kong and lies at the western shore of the great Pearl River Delta. It has two islands, Taipa and Coloane which all sum up to 22 square kilometers.
The name was derived from the Chinese A-maa-goa Bay of A-ma. A-ma was the name of a Chinese goddess, popular with the Chinese seafarers and fishermen who had a temple on the peninsula when the Portuguese first anchored there in 1513. The city has a population of about 465,000 (1999).

Its geographical co-ordinates are 22.1667° N and 113.5500° E. Languages spoken in Macao are as follows: Cantonese 85.7%, Hokkien 4%, Mandarin 3.2%, other Chinese dialects 2.7%, English 1.5%, Tagalog 1.3%, other 1.6%.
Culture and holidays
Macao is dominated by the Chinese culture since the Chinese constitutes 95% of the total population. The culture is the then followed by the Portuguese culture. The other sub-community that exist in Macao is the Macanese. The three sub-communities have traditionally intermingled for many years. Macao’s religion is marked by many churches and temples. Buddhism forms the primary religion. The oldest religious structure in the city is probably the Ma Kok Miu temple which date back to the thirteenth century shrine. The Chinese and Christian New year are major holidays. They also hold Dragon Boat festival which is an important Chinese festivity. The practice of traditional Chinese medicine is an inalienable part of culture in the sphere of medical education, and a very common, alternative, and popular choice of treatment in Macau, for people of all social classes. With over 90 percent of its population having Chinese ancestry, Macao has had a long history of using Chinese medicine.
Climate and weather
Macao’s climate is generally mild with high humidity. There are occasional typhoons in the months of July to September. The country receives annual average low temperature in January of 17.7 °C and an annual average high temperature in July of 31 °C. There are about 100 days with high temperature that are above 30 °C and less than 30 days with an average temperature below 10 °C in a year. It receives an annual precipitation of 2120 mm of rainfall. The rainy season falls from April to October with May being the rainiest month of the year.

Investors from Las Vegas have started building casinos in Macau which has led to a whole new tourist sector for the city. This is so because statistics have shown that the city attracts more tourists than Las Vegas. The long history of the city also attracts many tourists all over the world. Macau also hosts various sporting activities which attracts tourists too.
