Felipe de Neve, a Spanish governor, founded the city of Los Angeles in September of 1781. The city was part of Mexico in the year 1821 after the Mexican war of independence. When the Mexican-American war ended in 1848, the city of Los Angeles along with the rest of the state of California, were purchased in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became a part of the United States. The city was incorporated in the year 1850, just before California became a state.

Los Angeles is considered a global city. There are strengths in international trade, business, culture, entertainment, fashion, media, education, medicine, sports, science, and research. There are many renowned institutions that cover many cultural and professional fields. The city is considered to be one of the biggest economic engines of the country with a gross metropolitan product that exceeded $831 billion in 2008. This made it the 3rd largest GMP in the world, just after New York and Tokyo.

Hollywood is considered a part of Los Angeles and the area leads the world in creating video games, recorded music, and television productions.

History

The Tongva and the Chumash tribes first settled the area that is now Los Angeles. The area was claimed by the Spanish Empire in the year 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who was born in Portugal. The Franciscan missionary named Juan Crespi and Gaspar de Portola reached the area in 1769. In the year 1771, Junipero Serra, a Franciscan friar, ordered the building of the first mission for the area, the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. In September of 1781, the Los Pobladores, a group of 44 settlers, founded a pueblo in the area. Approximately 2/3 of the population was mulatto or mestizo, with mixes of African, European, and indigenous ancestry.  The area remained a small ranching town for several decades. The population increased to around 650 by the year 1820. The pueblo is commemorated today in the historic district of the city.

In 1821, New Spain achieved independence from the empire in Spain, and the pueblo was considered to be a part of Mexico. When the area was ruled by Mexico, the governor made the city of Los Angeles the regional capital. The city was released from Mexican rule after the war, which culminated with a treaty being signed in January of 1847.

The southern pacific line was completed in 1876 and brought the railroad to the city. In 1892, oil was discovered in the area and by the year 1923, these discoveries had helped the state of California become the largest oil producer of the country.

The population of the area had grown to over 102,000. This put pressure on the water supply for the city. The aqueduct was finished in 1913 and assured the city would continue to grow.

In 1910, the city annexed Hollywood and there were at least 10 movie companies located in the city. Over 80% of the film industry was concentrated in the area by the year 1921. The money from the movie industry insulated the city from some of the economic pain that the rest of the country suffered from during the Great Depression. By the year 1930, the population of the city was over a million. The Olympics were held in the city in 1932.

After the end of the Second World War, the city grew faster than ever. The city became one of the birthplaces for internet in the year 1969.

The summer Olympics were held in the city again in the year 1984. These Olympics were more financially successful than Olympics in the past, even though they were boycotted by 14 countries.

In 1992, racial tensions erupted when the police officers who were caught beating Rodney King were all acquitted. This caused large scaled riots. The Northridge earthquake in 1994 shook the city and caused over $12.5 billion in damage. There were 72 people who lost their life during this earthquake. The end of the century saw the Rampart scandal, which was one of the most extensive cases of police misconduct in U.S. history.

The Angels of Anaheim, a MLB team and the Ducks in the National Hockey League are based out of Anaheim. The Angels started out as a team in LA in the year 1961 and were moved to Anaheim in the year 1966.

LA has the 2nd largest television market in the country, but it does not have an NFL team. At one point, there were 2 NFL teams in the city, the Rams and the Raiders. Both teams left the city in the year 1995. The Raiders went to Oakland and the Rams went to St. Louis.
