Lisbon

Lisbon - description of the city:

Lisbon is the capital, major port of Portugal, situated at the mouth of the River Tagus, and the administrative center of Lisbon´s District. It was founded in ancient times as a settlement of the Lusitanian tribe, but then captured by the Romans. In the 714, it was occupied by the Arabs. At a relatively early stage of the Reconquista, in 1147 it was conquered by the Christians form the Arabs. In 1255, the city became the capital of the Portuguese kingdom. In 15th century, Lisbon became a peculiar capital of navigators, who were patronized by the Prince Henry, a son of the Portuguese King João I. Prince´s activity initiated the Age of Discovery, and the prince himself went down in history under the name of Henry the Navigator. As a result, in the 16th century, from the capital of the small European kingdom, Lisbon turned into the capital of the huge colonial power with holdings in Africa, South America and South-East Asia. Then the only rival of Portugal was Spain. The city currently has 678 thousand inhabitants, the agglomeration Grand Lisbon - approximately 2.3 million inhabitants. Port capacity is of 15 million tons a year. There is an international airport and a subway. Main industries include shipbuilding, electrical, chemical, petrochemical, metallurgical, textile and other industries. The city has the Academy of Sciences of Portugal, several universities and a great variety of museums. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum contains a collection of European art from the Gothic to Impressionism, the branches of Islamic and East Asian art. The Chiado Museum represents Portuguese art of the 19-20th centuries. There are also the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Ceramics Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of Religious Art, and the City Museum. Lisbon, like Rome, is located on seven hills, so there is a lot of stairs and lifts in the city. One of them, The Santa Justa Lift, is designed by the engineer Eiffel, the author of the famous Parisian tower. The city has several centers; each one belongs to a different time of the history of the city. The oldest district is Alfama, it served as a center in the Roman and Arabic times. Here is also the oldest Christian church in Lisbon, built in the 12th century. Nearby, on a hill is the castle of Saint-Georges towering. In the Christian Middle Ages the center gradually shifted to the flattest part of the city, where the Roseau Square is situated. Once it was a place of bullfighting. Now it is decorated with numerous fountains and a statue of King Pedro IV. The square is paved with mosaics. The western part of Lisbon occupies the so-called New Town with interesting architectural monuments of the 19th century. Ironically, this area is known for the oldest of the extant monuments of the city - the Roman aqueduct, comprising 35 arches and reaching a height of 66 m. The Pombaline Baixa is a completely new region where we can find banks and department stores. Another attraction of Lisbon is the monument to Fernando Magellan, the great navigator, who made the first trip around the world.
