Kwangju

Kwangju - description of the city:

Kwangju is a city of «Light» with a population of half-a-million people. This city is on the 5th place of honor among the largest cities in South Korea. Previously, the southern part was divided into 5 districts, and the city was the center of the South Jeolla Province until 2005th.

Kwangju was founded in 57 BC. This city during decades had a tremendous impact on the history of Korean democracy and human rights movement. In both cases of the invasion of the Korean territory by Japan in 1592th and in 1929th began uprising of students against the colonial rule of the Japanese.

Kwangju is considered to be the capital of democracy in Korea. Another tragic event connected with desperate residence of the freedom-loving spirit of th city, where demonstration of the citizens directed against the military government of Chun Duhvan, were ended in a cruel bloodshed in 1980th year. On May 18th were built the National Cemetery with the noble aim to allocate the Kwangju city, as the sacred land of democracy in South Korea.

Kwangju is also know as a city in culture and art, there are often exhibitions and performance of young talents, making the city vibrant and full of colors.

Every two years in the city are a contemporary art exhibitions of Gwangju Biennale), which opens its doors for two months and invites creative people from all over the world as artists, dancers, and other people associated with the contemporary art under the theme for the exhibition.

Each year, in the autumn in Kwangju Kimchi Festival is held annually, which  is represented by an infinite of different types of kimchi. Kimchi is a cabbage cooked i the national Korean style.

In the Kwangju city is a local landmark, the mountain park Munsan. It is a beautiful and magnificent place where are several Buddhist temples. Before the park is winding road making its way under trees, this road is most beautiful in the spring and autumn.
