Kuala Lumpur - description of the city:

Kuala Lumpur is the capital, an important economic center of Malaysia, located on the Malay Peninsula, and also the administrative center of the Federal Capital Territory. It is known as a city since 1980's of the 19th century. Since 1880 it became the capital of Selangor (principality, then state). In 1946-57, Kuala Lumpur was the administrative center of the British colony of Malayan Union (from 1948 - The Federation of Malaya). In 1957-63 it was the capital of the Federation of Malaya, from 1963 - of Malaysia. The city is home to 1.24 million inhabitants (including suburbs). It has a transport junction and an international airport. Main industries include food processing, metalworking, woodworking, and rubber processing. The city has two universities. Kuala Lumpur is known for Chinese houses and temples, mosques, Malay and Indian houses, modern buildings, monuments and parks.
