Jakarta - description of the city:
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, located on the island of Java. In the 16th century, it was known as a city of Sunda Kelapa, from 1527 was called Jayakarta; in the early 17th century, the city was destroyed by the Dutch. In 1619 on the site was built a fortress Batavia. The city around it in 1621 got the same name. On August 17, 1945 there was proclaimed the independence of Indonesia. In 1949, Batavia was renamed to Jakarta. Currently, it is home to 8.3 million inhabitants. It has a transport hub, a marine outer harbor Tanjung Priok in the Java Sea (turnover - above 15 million tons per year). Jakarta also has an international airport. Main industries include processing of rubber; textile, footwear, food industry; metal and machinery. There are universities, an art gallery, and the Institute of Indonesian culture with a museum in Jakarta. Within the historic core of the city there are channels, houses of 17-18 centuries, the Penang gate, the Portuguese church (both of 17th century), several Dutch churches, and a water palace.
