Iloilo - description of the city:

Iloilo City is a highly urbanized city and the center of the area of Western Visаyas. Iloilo is a capital of the eponymous province in the island of Pаnay. From the east and south the town is washed by he Iloilo Strait.

The history of the town begins from the time of Spanish colonization, when a number of small fishing hamlets were merged into one city, which is became the second most momentous port of the colony after 1855. Later, Queen Regent of Spain bestowed to Iloilo the title of «very noble and loyal town». In the early 20th century, only in Manila and Iloilo were stores, which were selling luxury items fro around the world. In 1888th, in La Pas area was opened the Agricultural Experiment Station; in 1891s were opened the School of Arts and Crafts and in 1894th was laid telephone connection.

Disposition of Iloilo and its architecture contain the features of the Spanish colonial heritage and, in the same time, of American period in the history of the country. Today every area of the city has its own central square, surrounded by office buildings and chapels, because the city was originally a union of independent settlements. In 1930s architect Juan Arellano developed a plan for the growth of Iloilo, which was inspirited by the expirience of Ebеnezer Howаrd about the «garden city».

One of the main sights of the town is the old Jaro Cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary. On the time of the annual celebration in honor of the saint in the chapel, there are a large array of believers. There is also an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the only icon in the Philippines which was consecrated personally by Pope John Paul II, during his visit ti Iloilo in 1981s. Interestingly, the bell tower of Jaro is one of the few, which is standing apart from the capel, in the country. It was built by Spaniards and served as a watchtower for the prevention of attacks against Muslims in Minandao. In the 1984s the earthquake had destroyed the bell tower, but in the mid-1990s the tower had been renovated.
