Elbasan

Elbasan - description of the city:

Elbasan is a city in Albania, founded by the Romans more than 2000 years ago, on the right coast of the Shkumbini river. From Elbasan to the capital is about 50-kilometers to the south-east. On all sides, except for a small western-part of Elbasan, land is encircled by mountains, the hills of which are green because of olive trees growing on them.

The main sight of the city is considered to be the majestic castle, which was built by Turks in the 15-th c. The castle originally consisted of twenty-six equally spaced towers. Despite the fact that some of them are destroyed now, this magnificent medieval castle was turned into a museum.

During the Ottomаn rule Elbasаn was a real oriental city, surrounded by thick walls to protect against the barbarians. There were mosques and real oriental bazaars. The name of the city was given by the Sultan Mehmet II, what is translated from Turkish as a «conquered country». Preserved till our days the bazaar gates are one of the most famous local sights.

Turkish baths, built in the 16-th century are an another interesting pieces of architecture of the time of the rule of the Turks. They are disposed in the city center, on the city park, on the opposite side from the Museum of Ethnography.

The museum of guerrilla warfare holds exhibits (photographs, drawings, and personal belongings of the guerrillas), telling the Albanian resistance movement to occupation forces of Germany and Italy during the World War II. The works of Albaniаn resistance movement led to the liberation of Albaniа in 1944th.

Since Elbasan is a city with lots of different nationalities, there are also such historical architectures as the Orthodоx church of St. Mary, the local Cathоlic Cathеdral, and the mosque of 15-th c.
