Dhaka - description of the city:

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh (from 1971), a port in the delta of the great rivers: the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. It is also the administrative center of the Dhaka region. In 1608 - 1717 it was the capital of Bengal. At that time, it was home for the Dutch, British and French factories. From 1765 the city and the whole country was coming under the control of the British. In 1947 - 1971 Dhaka represented the administrative center of East Pakistan. Since 1971 it became the capital of the independent state of Bangladesh.

In Dhaka, is about 3.6 million inhabitants (including suburbs). The city has an international airport and an outer harbor Narayanganj. Main industries include cotton, jute, metal, and food industry. It is also the ancient center of production of muslin.

There are the University, the Dhaka Museum and the Balda Museum in the capital. Dhaka is divided into two parts: the Old City and Ramna, a modern and comfortable area. Architectural monuments consist of the Fortress Lal Bagh, which has the mausoleum of Bibi Pari (1684), and the Sat Gumbad Mosque (1680's).
