Copenhagen - description of the city:

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, located on the islands of Zealand and Amager, the administrative center of the County of Copenhagen. It is the port of the Oresund Strait. The city was first mentioned in 1043, and in 1167 the castle and fortifications were built there. In 1254 it received the status of the city. Since the first half of the 15th century the city represents the royal residence and the capital. In 1658 Copenhagen was besieged by the troops of the Swedish King Charles X, and in 1700 by Charles XII.

Nowadays there are 466 thousand inhabitants in the city, in agglomeration Big Copenhagen - 1334 thousand. It is connected by roads and rail ferries with Malmo, Helsingborg and Landskrona (Sweden); there is also an international airport. Copenhagen controls two fifths of the value of industrial production of the country. Main industries include shipbuilding and diesel engine manufacturing, electrical, instrument, chemical, food and other industries. There are 3 universities in the city (including a technical one). Museums: National, Art, Museum of the sculptor B. Thorwaldsen, and others. The historic core of the city is located on the island Slotskholmen. Here are the Rosenborg Palace, the Exchange, the Palace Sharlottenborg (all of 17th century), the Christiansborg Palace-Parliament (18th century, was rebuilt after the fires in the 1800-1820 and 1907-1922), and the Amalienborg Palace complex (was in the process of building from 18th century).
