Conakry - description of the city:

Conakry-Guinea`s capital since 1958th, the cultural, political and economic center of the country. It is disposed on the Tоmbo island and Calum Pеninsula (which are interconnected by dam). History of the city starts from its founding in 1884th. It originated from the village, used the French colonialists as the administrative center of the estates in this part of Western Africa. Since 1891st it was a member of Guinea, a former colony of France, and in 1906th became part of French Africa. After the Second World War the city was the center of the national-liberation movement. In 1958th, after the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Guinea, the city was declared to be built with modern European-style buildings, some building were designed by Soviet architects (National Stadium, Hotel, Radio Center, Polytechnic Institute).

Conakry is the largest city in the country. Residents belong to different groups. The main language in the city is French, but it is not very common among the population. Residents enjoy a variety of different dialects that are very different from each other. Almost 90% of the population are Muslims. The rest are belonged to some pagan cults of Christianity.

Conakry is disposed on the west of the country, on the Atlantic shore, on the island of Tоmbo and Calum Peninsula, which are interconnected by dam, in an area called the Lower or the Maritime Guinea. The landscape is a flat lowland facing surface rock formations.

In major metropolitan areas is the palace of Rеsidence of the Republic. There is also a monument to the memory of «martyrs of coloniаlism». In the center of the city is one of the largest mosques in West Africa. National Museum tour represents a collection of masks, statues, old weapons (guns, bows and arrows), household utensils, a variety of musical instruments, tools.
