Chicago - description of the city:

Chicago is the third most populated city in the U.S., right after Los Angeles and New York City. It has nearly 2.7 million residents, and it is the most densely populated city in both Illinois and the Midwestern United States. It has a metropolitan area, with the nickname Chicagoland, and that metropolitan area is home to almost 9.5 million people, and it is the third biggest in the U.S. Chicago is the seat of Cook County. 

Chicago had official incorporation as a city in 1837, close by a portage between the Mississippi River watershed and the Great Lakes, and it had rapid growth in the middle of the 19th century.
