Brasilia

Brasilia - description of the city:

Brasilia is the capital of Brazil, located in the central part of the Brazilian Highlands, on the shore of an artificial reservoir. The decision of Brasilia’s construction was taken in 1955 by National Congress in response to a special clause in the Constitution on the transfer of the capital to a place close to the geographical center of the country. The construction project was designed by architect Lucio Costa. According to his plan, the outlines of the city were designed to resemble an airplane. Brasilia began to function as the capital in 1960. The city currently is home to 1.7 million inhabitants; with the adjacent land, allocated to the Federal (metropolitan) district, with a population of 2.9 million people. There are an international airport and the university. Brasilia performs purely administrative function and is not a major industrial center. There are only the food and light industries. Major public buildings in the city were designed by an architect Oscar Niemeyer. The city cathedral built by him of concrete and glass deserves a special attention. Among the attractions of the capital should also be noted the sculptural group "Warriors", decorating the square in front of the Palace of Justice. This work of a sculptor B. Georgie makes a great impression and perfectly blends into the urban landscape.
