Bern - description of the city:

Bern is the capital of Switzerland (since 1848), the administrative center of the Canton of Bern, located on the river Aare. It was founded in 1191. In 1353, the city joined the Swiss Confederation. Bern is home to 134 thousand inhabitants (including suburbs - about 330 thousand). There is an international airport. Main industries include engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical, food processing, and printing industry. The city has a University. Its museums consist of the Art, History, and the Alpine Museum. The latter is especially known for the magnificent collection of minerals. Medieval fortifications (15th century), the Gothic Cathedral of St. Vinzenz (1421-1588), and the City Hall (1406-17) are preserved in the capital. In Bern, annual fairs are held; moreover, the city is the largest market for horses and cattle.
