Benin City - description of the city:

In the south area of Nigeria on the lands of Edo State Benin City lies, at 40 km from the city limits of the coast of the river with the same name-Benin river.  

The modern city is famous for the rubber industry enterprises, high-quality product industries, which give substantial profits to their owners and also considered as base of city`s economy. In addition, an important role in the developing of Bеnin City the chemical and woodworking production play. Traditional crafts of citizens are the fabrication of palm oil, carved ivory and wood.

The city`s history begins in medieval times. Its first building were laid in the 10th century. Enough for a long period there was the center of the Kingdom of Bеnin. Its period of welfare was observed in the period from the 12th to the 17th century. In the late 15th century, Bеnin was under Portuguese control. From the 16th to the 17th century sleeve trade flourished there. Many called the local places the Coast of Slaves. At that time, part of the tropical fruits were collected for export to foreign countries. One of the activities of the townspeople were arts and crafts.

Beginning of the 18th century brought to the city and throughout the kingdom an economic downturn. But in the 19th century trade in palm products began to develop. In late winter of 1897s the city were took over by British army. As a result of their actions lots of city buildings were destroyed. on the streets a long time lots of conflagration are blazing. The main values of the kingdom were taken to England. Over time, all these items become the property of the many museums in the world.

Today, from the legacy of past eras in the city is palace of the ruler of the kingdom preserved, as well as the statue of the patron saint of the city-Emotan. Most city streets become the venue for the local feasts, which attract participants from across the county and abroad.
