Benguela - description of the city:

Benguela is a city in the African state of Angola. It is disposed on the Atlantic coast in the eponymous Gulf, in the middle of the African continent.

The history of the city starts from the time of founding Benguela by Portuguese in 1617th for the Portuguese conquerors, it was an important strategic point. there was one of the major centers of the slave trade. In 1911th, Benguela was just a small settlement. A couple of churches, a small number of stone houses and the fort-all of this were a vital part of that time. Over the past century the village managed to grow to the size of the city. Noe Benguela has elegant architecture private mansions and public buildings.

Benguela is both a beautiful and very simple town. In its appearance blended past and present of Africa. From the era of domination of Portugal the are preserved a fort(better condition than the other forts of Angola), as well as a hospital, the Church of San Antonio and the church of San Felipe.

Local residents speak Portuguese, but usually they use local dialects. For tourists locals are mostly friendly. The main religion in the city is Christianity, but there are also preserved and national beliefs. On the local market is sells everything: tobacco and coal, goats and CDs, and etc. In the market can be found a local stylist, who is doing African braids.

The main sight of Benguela is its coast. There tourists can admire beautiful tropical trees, see in the water near the shore nimble exotic fish, listen to nocturnal birds and feel the sea breeze. In the coastal zone water sports are well-developed. There are surfing, diving, water skiing sports. Tourists can ride on a catamaran or a parachute jump.

The food in Benguela, as well as throughout Angola, is a mix of Portuguese and African cuisine: fish, fruits and vegetables, beans and rice.
