Bangkok - description of the city:

Bangkok (Krungtep) is the capital of Thailand (since 1782). It was founded in the 17th century on the territory of a small fishermen settlement.

It is the main sea and river port of the country at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. In the 19th century, it was a major center of the slave trade in Indochina.The city is located in easily flooded areas, so there are a lot of pile dwellings.

Currently Bangkok is home to 6.5 million inhabitants (including suburbs). Port capacity is approximately of 30 million tons per year. There is an international airport. Major industries include rice peeling, sawmill, paper, light, cement, oil refining, chemical, mechanical engineering and metal industry; and artistic crafts. There are universities, a planetarium, and an art gallery.

The city has about 300 temples, mostly Buddhist. The most famous consist of Wat Pho (Chettuphon, 19th century), Radjabopit (mid-19th century), Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), and the Marble Temple (early 20th century). Grand royal palace complex occupies an area of ​​60 hectares. Among the palace structures there are buildings of the 18th, 19th and 20th century. The oldest street of the city is called New Street. In the center of the capital the amusement park is situated. Bangkok is also famous for its water park, where there is the world's largest wave pool.

In 1987, over Bangkok was raised a giant balloon in the shape of an elephant, which was to serve as a symbol of the city.
