Asmara

Asmara - description of the city:

Asmara is disposed on the Ethiopian highlands, at an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level. The city became the capital of Eritrea in 1897th, before the center of the state was Massawa city.

Asmara originated from four merged villages. They were founded by shepherds, who were very happy people because of an abundance of water in the region. Originally the city was called Arbat Esmer.

The biggest impact on the culture and architecture the Italian invaders had exactly in Asmara. This is evident not only in the clear layout of streets and decoration of houses, but also in squares and coffee shops, which are fairy common. Many locals are dressed in Italian style, and on the streets can often be heard the Italian language.

City will surprise visitors with its tidiness and cleanliness, good attitude of local residents. In Asmara are schools, TV, there is a university, newspapers are published. There is the first in Eritrea brewery was opened, which operates today. UNESCO has included Asmara in the list with the global value.

Asmara vegetation pleases the eye. Basically, it is presented by bushes, eucalyptus, aloe, jacaranda, bougainvillea, and many other ornamental plants. Can not but mention about cacti: there are great number of them, with different types and sizes. The animal world of Eritrea can be seen in the local zoo, which is disposed near Asmara. To the south of the capital is the highest point of Eritrea- Soira mountain (3013 meters).

Asmara is not like other African cities. Only there is the beautiful Cathedral in Romanesque-Lomard style. It was built in 1922-1923th years and it is known for its 52-meter bell tower. Oreste Skanavini architect worked on this cathedral project.

Very close to the Cathedral is the opera House. Colonnade with a ladder, a small garden-is all seemed moved from Tuscany. Today there is no opera shows, unfortunately.

History lovers will enjoy an excursion to the National Museum. the exhibition consist of artifacts found by archaeologists during excavations in Adulis. After a complete renovation of the museum there will be more material about the struggle for the independence of the nine ethnic groups of the country.
